Defining the Forests

چکیده
Forests of the South are very diverse and productive. Included among southern forests are the boreal sprucefir forests of the highest mountain peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains to the lowest bottomland hardwoods on flood-deposited soil with elevations near sea level. In between are the diverse upland hardwood stands in northerly mountainous areas of the South and southern pines and hardwnocls along the Coastal Plain. Climate of the south is p~~ed(~tiiin~uitly continental. except for the cooler Appalachian Mountains. grading t0 maritime along the coast (Schoeneberger 1995 1 . Temperatures are generally mild in winter and hot in summer (USDA Forest Service 1969). Mean maximum temperatures for January vary from the 40s (degrees F) in the mountains to the 70s in Florida. Mean minimum temperatures for January range from the 20s in the mountains to the 60s in Florida. July mean minimum temperatures vary from the mid 50s in the mountains to the 70s along the Gulf Coast and Florida. Mean maxiIIILIIII temperatures are about 90 for most of the region and slightly lower in the mountains. Mean length of the freeze-free period varies from as few as 150 days in the

Forest health and global change.
Humans rely on healthy forests to supply energy, building materials, and food and to provide services such as storing carbon, hosting biodiversity, and regulating climate. Defining forest health integrates utilitarian and ecosystem measures of forest condition and function, implemented across a range of spatial scales. Although native forests are adapted to some level of disturbance, all forest...
متن کاملMore results on greedy defining sets
The greedy defining sets of graphs were appeared first time in [M. Zaker, Greedy defining sets of graphs, Australas. J. Combin, 2001]. We show that to determine the greedy defining number of bipartite graphs is an NP-complete problem. This result answers affirmatively the problem mentioned in the previous paper. It is also shown that this number for forests can be determined in polynomial time....
متن کاملRethinking Tropical Forest Conservation: Perils in Parks
Large, pristine, uninhabited parks are the defining criterion of success in conserving tropical forests, according to some conservationists. It is argued that human residents in tropical forests inevitably deplete populations of large animals through hunting, triggering a chain reaction of ecological events that greatly diminish the conservation value of these forests. Hence, the removal of peo...
متن کاملEfficiency of different measures for defining the applicability domain of classification models
The goal of defining an applicability domain for a predictive classification model is to identify the region in chemical space where the model's predictions are reliable. The boundary of the applicability domain is defined with the help of a measure that shall reflect the reliability of an individual prediction. Here, the available measures are differentiated into those that flag unusual object...
متن کاملClassical proof forestry
Classical proof forests are a proof formalism for first-order classical logic based on Herbrand’s Theorem and backtracking games in the style of Coquand. First described by Miller in a cut-free setting as an economical representation of firstorder and higher-order classical proof, defining features of the forests are a strict focus on witnessing terms for quantifiers and the absence of inessent...
